$130 for a sewing machine not enough?

I am a first buyer for a sewing machine and I'm overwelmed by the selection out there. I went to a store and the attendent told me the more expensive the better! Is that really true? I want to start with basic projects like pillow cases, hemming pants ect. Do I really have to spend so much money or is a sewing machine for about 0 good enough? Which product should I chose? Is the Brother CE4000 RF a good machine? Thank you for your help.

At that price point, I’d encourage you to think about a good used machine. The low end machines are mostly not repairable if anything important breaks. I managed to wear such a machine out in a year of not very heavy sewing. They also tend to have more problems holding tension than the better grade machines, which can be very frustrating. I’ve had beginners in tears because they couldn’t sew well on their machine. I’d set them down in front of one of my machines and most of their problems would disappear. And mine are a couple of ca. 1950 straight stitchers and a 10 year old midline electronic — so not the fanciest machines on the block. Just not balky.

For the lower end machines, the best out there right now seems to be Janome; Kenmore appears to be Janome in disguise.

It depends on what your doing on the sewing machine. If your doing Quilting you could spend more. But i think if your hemming pants, etc. $130 is fine. I don’t know alot about sewing machines. But I do know that Joann’s Store, has sewing machines and you can ask about it.

Think about buying a used machine. If you do not want to spend too much. Just make sure you try it before you buy. This way you could get a cheaper machine, it you are happy with what you are doing with it, then later buy a new one. You may find that you do not use it as much as you thought you would. I have had Brother machines and have found them very good.My current one I bought at a yard sale for $5.00, just had to buy a new bobbin case and it works fine. Try to get the instruction booklet with it, but even if you cannot, you can usually get them on line. Happy sewing.

I don’t know that model but if you only plan to use it for simple projects then the less expensive one is ok.You need to get a free arm style for hemming its alot easier. It doesn’t have to do more than basic, which is straight stitch, zig zag and come with the basic things instruction book, oil, ect.Don’t base your decision on the money but on how much the machine does for the money, and how much you will actually use it,plan to keep IT several years because they usually last 20 years or longer. You can always move up if you find you love sewing.Mine is about 40 years old and frankly I wouldn’t trade it for any new machine out there.I do look every year or so and mine still has it all.
